A fine pochoir image in very good condition by George Barbier of the great Ballets Russes ballerina Tamara Karsavina dancing with Vaslav Nijinsky in 'Cléopatra'.
The ballet was first performed as 'Une Nuit d'Egypte' in St Petersburg in 1908 and premiered in Paris as 'Cléopâtra' in 1909. Music by Anton Arensky and other Russian composers and choreographed by Michel Fokine with costumes by Léon Bakst.
The tale is of two young lovers, Ta-Hor and Amoun. But Ta-Hor on seeing Queen Cléopâtra falls in love with her. Cléopâtra's price for Ta-Hor to spend a night with her is for him to drink poison the next morning. He pays the price and is found dead by his lover Amoun. The ballet caused a sensation because of its sensuality and revealing costumes.
