The Latin title of the picture is inscribed in white gothic lettering on the original grey mount, presumably by the artist; (the frame is new and is a plain gold moulding). The chivalric scene of this very accomplished charcoal drawing shows a Christian knight on horseback and with two hounds, as he is about to enter a dark and threatening area of the forest. The horse can instinctively sense the danger. The knight holds his sword aloft by its scabbard and commends his safety into the hands of God - the meaning of the Latin title.
