Alfred Bentley (1879-1923) was a member of the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers. In "British Printmakers 1855-1955" ( Garton &Co and Scolar Press), Bentley is described thus: "....to some of his last landscapes he imparted a poetic tranquillity. The French scenes echo Corot and the integration of the figures is achieved with distinction. The artist, while acknowledging the influence of Frank Short, was a close friend of Malcolm Osbourne, with whom he went on etching tours in France."

Bentley was awarded the MC for service during the first world war. He sustained injuries from which he died in 1923. His work is in the collections of The Ashmolean, British and Victoria and Albert Museums.
