Girl with Cigarette

Watercolour

Basil Reynolds was born in 1916 and educated at Holloway County School. He joined the Adams and Fidier Agency in 1933. He became one of the country’s youngest cartoonists with strips in national newspapers in the 1930s. Before and after the war he worked for the Disney Organisation and from 1971 illustrated for the magazine Disneyland. The watercolour shown here is of course a work of a far more adult nature, and it has all the artist’s remarkable drawing skill and fantasy evocation as well as playfulness.
