The Theatre at Delphi  in Greece was built in the 4th Century B.C. I t  gives spectacular views  of the valley and mountains beyond, and this element is captured by Decaris in his engraving  as he also gives a detailed account of the Theatre ruins. The Theatre was built of local Parnassus limestone. The scene lends itself most suitably to the artist’s style and method of engraving.

The Theatre  was a venue for the festivals that took place in Delphi and there would be performances of plays, poetry and music. There were  35 rows which allowed for five thousand spectators.
