This painting was used as the frontispiece for the Mandrake, limited edition publication of the great symbolist novel Salammbo by Gustave Flaubert (published 1930). We also have available an identical version in monochrome pencil, ink and wash.

Mackey was an acclaimed official war artist in the first world war and afterwards a highly respected artist of paintings, prints and illustrations. His work is in the permanent collections of the Imperial War Museum and the Royal Academy.
