Laus Veneris is the long and passionate poem by Swinburne which contains his own reflections upon the Tannhauser story of the medieval knight who becomes erotically trapped within the kingdom (queendom) of Venus. The highly regarded illustrations by John Buckland Wright (all actual wood engravings) provide very sensual visualisations of the pair, trapped in the ecstasy of their love.
