Mallery’s Le Morte Darthur illustrated by Aubrey Beardsley publisher J.M. Dent 1909 for sale

Le Morte Darthur – Sir Thomas Mallery – Aubrey Beardsley

Published by J. M. Dent and Sons 1909

The second edition in original decorated green cloth with Beardsley’s cover design in gilt.

Very good condition with just the slightest scuffing to edges of spine. Some foxing to inside of boards. Pages clear, intact with illustrations excellent.

This magnificent edition of Mallory’s Morte Darthur was beautifully printed by J.M.Dent in 1909 and contains the historic and greatly celebrated illustrations by Aubrey Beardsley. These black and white images were produced using the line block method with tremendous clarity of line and the darkest and sharpest inking of the black areas. This very early work in Beardsley’s career, and in a life so tragically ended by illness, was truly monumental. It would take a genius to create such a multitude of drawings in so short a time. Nearly every page contains at least one small illustration and then there are many magnificent full page illustrations and even those fully covering double pages.  There are 10 chapter headings included which had been mistakenly omitted from the first edition. This is an excellent copy of this great achievement of publishing and illustration and also a beautiful example of art nouveau.
